What work does the proposed visit include?
A service price is useful only when the included work is understood. Give each provider the same appliance description, reason for the visit and access information. Explain whether you want routine servicing, assessment of a reported problem or advice following an earlier written finding. A proposal for one of these tasks should not be treated as the price of all three.
Ask whether the amount covers attendance, the described work and a completion record. Confirm whether a separate diagnostic visit is proposed and how its findings would lead to a further quote. Do not assume that accepting an assessment authorises replacement parts or other work that has not been described.
Who approves additional work?
Ask what happens if the provider finds something outside the agreed scope. A price comparison should mark unknown amounts as unknown. An allowance, an estimate and a fixed amount may have different conditions. Ask the provider to explain the status of each figure, applicable tax treatment and any separately charged attendance or return visit. Keep the written response with the proposal.
Record exclusions and the final account
Access restrictions, missing records or a change to the requested work can affect the proposed scope. Ask which assumptions were used and what would cause the amount to change. Confirm payment terms directly with the provider rather than relying on a general website statement.
After the visit, compare the invoice with the accepted scope and any approved variation. Ask for clarification where a line is unclear.
